Q - How does your CES (cranial electrotherapy stimulation) smoking cessation system work to make you quit smoking? Do you have any feedback in relation to success rate? How long does it take for most individuals? How many have you sold so far? Does it help with the mood swing related to nicotine withdrawal?

A - I want to emphasize that the behavioral component of the Lotsohelp program is equally as important as the CES (cranial electrotherapy stimulation) unit. The behavioral program helps one stay off the nicotine. The average number times one “quits” before success is about 5. We have hold hundreds of CES units. Yes it helps a lot with mood swings brought on by nicotine withdrawal.

Q - My husband has been diagnosed with tinnitus (ringing in both his ears) last November. He has been told by many different doctors that he has to “ learn to live with it” and/or go through private sound therapy. Do you offer anything to patients with this diagnosis?

A - Yes, we treat many clients with tinnitus. There are several forms of tinnitus- some respond very quickly to neurotherapy, whereas others require a more extensive behavioral program in conjunction with the neurotherapy. The home based sound therapy is usually a sound masker, which clients have reported to be useful. The first step in neurotherapy would be to do a brain assessment to see where the problem resides. Treatments are focused on normalizing the problem areas.

Q - I have heard that biofeedback can help with Raynaud's Phenomenon. My hands get really cold and I would like to learn how to keep them warm. Can you help with this problem?

A - Biofeedback (peripheral blood flow) is a very successful treatment for Raynaud’s.
Editor’s Note: Raynaud's Phenomenon is a disorder that can affect the blood vessels in the fingers, toes, ears, and nose. Symptoms manifest as vasospastic attacks, causing constriction of the blood vessels in the extremities.

Q - I am interested in help for anxiety and panic attacks- for both my 21-year-old son and myself. We live in Penticton. How does it work when patients are far away?

A - We treat clients from all over the world who stay for several weeks of intensive treatment. Since you are relatively close, it may be best to come in for a week of treatment, and then return after a few months for a second intensive week.

Q - Dr. Swingle, is there anything new for (name withheld) to help with her seizures?

A - The only demonstrated effective treatment for recalcitrant drug resistant seizure disorders is intensive neurotherapy to increase the amplitude of the Sensory Motor Rhythm and reduction of slow frequency amplitude. This is the treatment we were using with (name withheld). The only option from a neurotherapy perspective is to do an intensive treatment (3 to 5 times per week). I know this is expensive, but there are no shortcuts at present.

Q - A good friend of mine has an 11-year-old boy with this condition (ODD, or Oppositional Defiancy Disorder), and is searching for a treatment. Could this program help?

A - We see many children with this diagnosis. Our treatment consisting of neurotherapy, behavior therapy, and if needed, remediation training is very effective for these children. Often the diagnosis of ODD is not appropriate for these children. Brain mapping frequently reveals other conditions affecting the child’s behavior, which when corrected eliminate the oppositional behaviors. The first step is to schedule an intake where a brain functioning assessment is obtained.

Q - I am inquiring about having my 13-year-old son tested. He has what I believe is an anxiety disorder. We have been struggling for almost five years with this. We have home schooled for a couple of years because of this situation and I am desperate to find some other alternative.

A - I would certainly recommend that you have a neurotherapy assessment. We see many children with conditions similar to those you describe. There can be many different areas of brain dysfunctions associated with these conditions. An EEG (electroencephalograph) assessment will determine precisely what areas are implicated and how the situation can be corrected. If you let us know your location we may be able to refer you to qualified people in your area. Do NOT take your child to anyone not certified to practice neurotherapy.

Q - Do you treat chronic and acute pain from severe arthritis and ongoing problems severe enough to warrant opiates to assist management?

A - Yes, we see many chronic/acute pain clients. In addition to several forms of neurotherapy we also use microstimulators and peripheral feedback techniques that are usually very effective.

Q - My son was recently diagnosed with ADD. How does biofeedback help? We live in North Bay Ontario and if possible, would like to see a doctor nearby. We can even come to Vancouver. Also are there any simple strategies that would help for now until we get biofeedback in place?

A - Neurofeedback can correct brain functioning associated with ADD. In contrast to drugs that sedate, neurotherapy corrects the problem. The nearest certified practitioner to you is Dr. Lynda Thompson in Toronto. If you wish to come to Vancouver, we see many people who fly in for intensive treatment. For simple ADD, it usually involves a week of intensive treatment (11 sessions) with a second week after about 3 months. In the meantime, I would recommend the book on parenting hints by Dr. Vince Monstrata "Parenting Children with ADHD" , available from the American Psychological Association. I would also recommend that you use our "Attention" harmonics CD, available through www.soundhealthproducts.com. Play it softly while the child is doing homework, reading or listening to a story. Instructions are on the CD insert.

Q - My daughter is an athlete and I am wondering if you would be able to work with her to help reduce her anxiety. She has previously gone to the Olympics, but puts a great deal of pressure on herself. Her sport is one that requires lowering her breathing and heart rate and being as calm as possible. Would you be able to assist her with your techniques?

A - Yes we would be able to help her. There are several protocols that are helpful. These include neurotherapy for optimal performance and peripheral biofeedback and relaxation techniques for quieting the mind and body to sustain hyper focus. Lowering respiration rate and heart rate is a straightforward peripheral biofeedback protocol.

Q - I have a nine-year-old son that has recently been diagnosed with AD(H)D, and I am thinking of trying biofeedback. What are your success rates for this condition? Are there any guarantees if the treatment is not successful?

A - There are many forms of ADHD so the first step is to have a brainwave assessment to determine the exact areas of brain inefficiencies. Our success rates are excellent. For common ADD we are at over 95%. Some forms of ADHD are more problematic, but nonetheless success rates are good. There are no guarantees, but you will know within five sessions if your son is going to respond to neurotherapy.

Q - My 14 year old son is having a hard time keeping up in high school (grade 8), creating friendships, and feeling good about himself. (I think he feel like a failure most of the time. A healer has recommended your work. Does my son's description seems to fit in well with the work you do? Thanks for your feedback. Also, could you please give me an idea of the cost of treatment? We are not on an extended plan of any type.

A - We see many clients with conditions like those you describe. The important aspect of our treatment is the determination of the exact nature and location in the brain of the inefficiencies. Often the child has several minor brain inefficiencies that collectively cause serious problems in learning and/or concentration. The brain assessment that we do on the first visit will isolate these areas of inefficiency that are then corrected with neurotherapy. The initial brain assessment is $180 and subsequent treatments average about $105 each. I cannot give you any indication of the number of treatments that would be necessary to correct the problem until the brain assessment is completed. However, the range is generally between 15 and 30 treatments depending on the location and severity of the problem(s).

Q - Please let me know as soon as your book "Its all in your head" is available. Also are there any books available now that might help in understanding how neuropsychology works?

A - There is a book entitled "A Symphony in the Brain", by journalist Jim Robbins that many clients find helpful.

Q - Do you have an office in Montreal or know of a similar neurotherapy practice that has an office in the Montreal area?

A - I am sorry but we do not have offices in Montreal. The best source for finding Certified Neurotherapists is The Biofeedback Certification Institute of America (BCIA). Go to their site and look for practitioners in your area who are certified in EEG.
